During your trip to the United States you have the right to drive with your French license as long as your stay lasts less than 3 months and your license is more than one year old. To rent a car in the United States, you must be over 21 years old or even 25 in some cases.
The international driving licence is not mandatory and is in no way self-sufficient to rent a car. However, some car rental companies require an international driving licence from their French customers. Therefore, we invite you to check with your service provider before your trip.
As soon as the period of stay exceeds 3 months, the French permit is no longer sufficient and it becomes mandatory to pass the driving licence of the State of residence. As laws differ from state to state, we invite you to contact the French consulates of the states concerned.
It should also be noted that in the United States, car seats are mandatory for children with different models depending on age and condition.
