There are some cases where you need to apply for a visa instead of ESTA for example:
- If your stay in the United States will last more than 90 days.
- If you are travelling to the United States on a non-signatory air carrier.
- If you are travelling to the United States for reasons other than tourism or business.
Yes, if your ESTA application has been refused you will need to apply for a VISA to be able to travel to the United States.
Due to security and confidentiality laws, CBP cannot tell you the reason why a travel authorization has been denied.
I HAVE ALREADY TRAVELLED IN IRAN, IRAQ, LIBYA, SOMALIA, SUDAN, SYRIA, AND/OR YEMEN CAN I STILL HAVE AN ESTA AUTHORIZATION?
If you have travelled to one or more of these countries after March 1, 2011, you may not be eligible for an ESTA authorization.

Yes, with your ESTA you can leave the airport without any problem. The term "in transit" does not refer to stopover flights where passengers are not allowed to leave the airport.
ESTA applications are often rejected due to simple errors such as spelling mistakes or an incorrect passport expiry date. Here are the most common errors leading to ESTA refusal:
- You answered one of the questions in the Visa Waiver Program incorrectly
- You have exceeded the time allowed during a previous visit.
- You used a passport number that has already been reported lost or stolen.
- You worked illegally in the United States
- You have already been refused a visa or entry to the United States.
With regard to the Visa Waiver Program, the US law has introduced a flexible system that facilitates the travel procedure to the US.
A USA visa is a document that meets the legal and regulatory requirements of the United States. People with a valid visa will still be able to travel to the United States for the purpose for which the visa was issued and are exempt from applying for a travel authorization (ESTA). And so since ESTA does not meet the legal criteria, it cannot be considered a Visa.
Having an approved travel authorization or Visa is required not only to travel to the United States but also to transit through that country to another country; this request concerns all nationals or citizens of countries benefiting from the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).
When filling the ESTA form remember to select the answer "yes" to the existing question on the ESTA travel authorization application "Is your trip to the United States only a transit to another country? »
Are you travelling with family or friends or with a work group? Making a group request for ESTA travel authorization is now available on our website esta-official.co.uk.

Bon voyage !
Have you obtained your ESTA travel authorization? Have you moved on to the preparation stage of your stay?
Las Vegas is a mythical city that has not finished seducing... Where else in the world can you visit Venice, Paris and New York in the same place? Where else do the desert and casinos meet? Palms and slot machines? Las Vegas, in the heart of the Mojave Desert, is simply a mirage.
Fremont Street: It is recommended to wait until nightfall to visit the famous Fremont Street to see its charm. Indeed, during the day the street is much less animated, there are fewer visitors and obviously, you will not see the giant screen that covers the Fremont Street called "Viva Vision".
Fremont Street is the second most visited place in Las Vegas by tourists after the "Las Vegas Strip"; the Fremont Street experience is performed on a 416-metre long ceiling screen with sound and light that will dazzle your senses.
Generally, this show continues until midnight, allowing tourists to take advantage of the evening to visit the first hotels and casinos in Las Vegas.
If you wish to transport your articles or kitchen utensils in cabin luggage, we advise you to contact your airline to know the precise rules concerning the maximum weight, the regulatory dimensions, prohibited contents... In the meantime esta-official.co.uk will indicate you the regulation of a non-exhaustive list but which will include the majority of the kitchen articles.

- Water bottles (empty)
- Detergents (powder or granules)
- Detergents (liquid)

Mixers: allowed in the cabin if the blade has been removed and placed in checked baggage. In other words, all sharp objects placed in checked baggage must be secure, so make sure that the packaging is secure so as not to cause injuries to baggage handlers and screening officers.
Note: a corkscrew with blade is only allowed in checked baggage and subject to the same restrictions as a sharp object.
Coffee machine: your coffee machine is expensive and fragile! So you'll be comfortable if you pack it carefully and pack it in your carry-on baggage.
Kettles/Waffles: If you have a kettle or waffle iron in your luggage, ask your airline for permission before placing it above the cabin or under the seat in front of you.
Utensils: With the exception of plastic or butter knives, knives are not allowed in your cabin luggage.
Until the application has been paid, the applicant has the option of changing the date of issue of the passport or the expiry date.
In the event that the ESTA application has already been paid for and the applicant indicates the wrong date of issue of the passport or its expiry date, the traveller must apply for a new travel authorization since the old application will be cancelled. The associated fees will be charged for each new request.
Before you board your plane, it is best to ask the right questions about the liquid foods that are allowed to be carried on board the plane.
It is advisable to follow the rules carefully so as not to find yourself in an embarrassing situation. Recently, most airports in the world have followed the model of the United States and the European Union as well as other countries such as China and Thailand.
Here are some instructions to follow when loading your liquid food on board the plane:
- Your liquid content must not exceed 1 liter
- The items on board must be packed and contained in an airtight bag.

Once in New York, it is difficult for a yellow taxi to go unnoticed on the streets of the Big Apple. Unavoidable in New York, yellow taxis are a symbol of the American city. So how can you take a New York taxi easily and cheaply?
The first thing to do before taking a taxi in New York is to check and identify the free vehicles of those who are busy.
If you notice that the panel is on, this means that the taxi is available. On the other hand, if the latter is switched off, the taxi is already occupied or simply no longer in service.
Whether you are in New York or any other city in the United States, you must indicate your address using street intersections.
There are two types of taxis in New York City, yellow taxis and lime green taxis. Yellow taxis are the most popular and economical taxis. As for lemon green taxis, they are taxis that travel outside the Manhattan area like Harlem and the Bronx.
When you get into a taxi in New York, the first thing to do is to check if your taxi's meter shows $2.50 as the starting amount. Officially a taxi in New York, can only take a maximum of 4 people. It is necessary to take that into consideration if you have a lot of luggage with you.
It is recommended to avoid New Yorkers' peak working hours, which are between 4pm and 8pm Monday to Friday. The night rate may be higher than the day rate, so it is necessary to count 0.50$ more between 8pm and 6am.
You can pay for your trip either in cash or by credit card. Not to mention taking into consideration the amount of the tip, this may vary according to your appreciation. The minimum amount of the tip is 20% up to 30% of the asking price.
Groups of people who want to travel to the U.S. for a maximum stay of 90 days can apply for a group ESTA that will also facilitate the management of their files.
Since it is quite possible for each traveler to make his own request, the grouped ESTA request allows only one person to be in charge of managing the file and requests, he will have to provide some mandatory information, such as family name, first name, date of birth and email address. The group contact person will have access to perform all management actions, namely:
- See the group request
- Check the status of requests
- Make the payment
- Modify the information
- Add or remove requests within the group (a new request or an unpaid request)
- Check the status of all responses in a group (a "Pending" response for a folder in a group will not delay the processing of the remaining requests).
The acquisition of a travel authorization only gives you the right to travel to the United States without a Visa.
However, this authorization does not mean that you are admissible to the United States.
In all cases, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers determine your admissibility upon arrival at the ports of entry.
This inspection may reveal that you are inadmissible under the Visa Waiver Program or for any other reason that doesn’t meet the legal and regulatory requirements of the United States.
Normally, you should be careful when registering and you should not exceed the mandatory fields.
If you enter the wrong contact information, your request for authorization will not be rejected, but you will be asked to perform a manual review.
As a result, additional time will be added before the result of your travel authorization request is obtained.
The regulations on your luggage are complex and must be taken into consideration when travelling to the United States.

Whether accompanied or not, a child from a country benefiting from the exemption program, and even at a very young age, must have an ESTA authorization to travel to the U.S.
Of course, the ESTA authorization requirement also applies to simple stopovers or transits.
Generally, an ESTA authorization for a minor must be requested by his guardian, it is the same process as an ESTA request for an adult.
You must understand the terms of the ESTA on behalf of your child, and when registering, please select on the form the second option in the Waiver section (part three only).
Children must have their own passports to apply for an ESTA. If a child is on his or her parents' passport, he or she will not be eligible to apply.
ESTA authorization expires once your current passport has expired or the information on it has changed. In this case, you are called upon to make a new request and go through the same procedure including payment.
WHY IS AN ESTA TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION MANDATORY FOR TRAVELERS BENEFITING FROM THE VISA WAIVER PROGRAM (VWP)?
Under U.S. law, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has implemented several measures to strengthen the security of the Visa Waiver Program.
The primary measure was the foundation of ESTA, which provides an additional security layer that helps DHS determine two criteria before a foreigner travels:
- If the applicant is entitled to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)
- If the trip poses a risk to law enforcement or internal security in the United States.
Under the "Recommendations for the Implementation of the 11/9 Act 2007" (11/9 Act) Section 217 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has implemented several measures to enhance the security of the Visa Waiver Program.
The primary measure was the foundation of ESTA, which provides an additional layer of security that helps DHS determine whether the applicant has the right to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) or whether the flight poses a risk to law enforcement or internal security in the United States.
Cases where you need to apply for an ESTA:
- children; whether accompanied or not; (regardless of age) who are nationals of Visa Waiver Countries (VWPs) must have their own ESTA permit before travelling to the United States for a maximum of 90 days as tourists.
- If you have dual nationality, one from a VWP country and one from a non-VWP country; you must apply for an ESTA if you travel with your VWP passport, otherwise the ESTA does not apply if you use the passport of a non-VWP country and in this case you must have a visa and not an ESTA.
- If you are a permanent resident of Canada and a national of a country participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) and you arrive in the United States by air or sea, you must apply for an ESTA.
Cases where you do not have to apply for an ESTA:
- If you are not a national of a country targeted by the VWP, you must have a VISA as ESTA does not apply to you.
- US nationals or citizens don’t need to apply for ESTA authorization to travel to the US. Their American passports replace the Visa or ESTA.
- People with valid visas will still be able to travel to the United States for the purposes for which they were issued that visa.
- If you are a legal permanent resident of the United States and a citizen of a country benefiting from the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), you do not need an ESTA.
- If you are travelling with a Canadian passport, an ESTA authorization application is not required as well.
- If you are a national of a country participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) and entering the United States by land from Mexico or Canada, an ESTA application is not required.
- However, you will need to fill the I-94W paper form and complete a manual entry process at the land border crossing. Unlike if you have ESTA, you will not be required to complete the I-94W form and your registration process will be accelerated.
- ESTA is not required if you are a permanent resident of Canada and a national of a VWP beneficiary country entering the U.S. by land. However, having an approved ESTA in this case will facilitate your entry into the United States and eliminate the I-94W form.
- If you wish to visit GUAM and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and you benefit from the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), you will not need an ESTA. However, you cannot exceed a maximum stay of 45 days and you will not be allowed to return to the United States.
- If you are travelling to GUAM and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) from the United States, ESTA is not required as this trip is considered a domestic flight.
- If you are a national of a country participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) and you enter the United States by air or sea from Mexico or Canada, you must apply for an ESTA.
- If you are a national of a VWP country and planning to cross the U.S. only to travel to another country, you must apply for an ESTA. Remember to select the answer "yes" to the question "Is your trip to the United States just a transit to another country? ».
- If you are travelling from Guam, the Commonwealth or the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) to the U.S., an inspection is required to see if this trip is part of the VWP, in which case you will need to make an ESTA request.
- If you are a national of a VWP country and travelling under the VWP to Puerto Rico or the United States Virgin Islands for short-term business or tourism, an ESTA application is required.
Under the Visa Waiver Program, U.S. law has implemented a flexible system that facilitates the travel procedure to the U.S.
For example, if your name has been changed and you still keep the passport with the old name, the ESTA system allows you to apply with your new name and the number of your old passport.
From this, even travel to the U.S. will be allowed with a ticket bearing your updated information and your old passport.
On the other hand, assuming that you have already obtained your approved authorization and you were obliged to change your name as a result of marriage, divorce or other legal circumstances.
Under these conditions, you will be called upon to make a new ESTA request before 72 hours of your next trip.
However, the system may make exceptions in emergencies and adapt quickly to your situation. Therefore, an additional fee will be charged for any new travel authorization request.
Finally, for those who have a post-dated passport, your ESTA application with the passport number can only be made after your marriage.
Frequently, in such situations the application procedure will not take more than 20 minutes.
A USA visa is a document that meets the legal and regulatory requirements of the United States.
People with a valid visa will still be able to travel to the United States for the purpose for which the visa was issued and are exempt from applying for an approved travel authorization (ESTA) when travelling.
Once your travel request is processed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) administration, you will receive an immediate response or within two to three days.
However, this response is not automatically a positive response. Indeed, here are the three statuses of the request you can receive:
- Authorization granted: Your travel request has been approved under the Visa Waiver Program. From this, you will be allowed to make several trips to the U.S. over the next two years. However, this authorization does not represent your admission to the U.S.; the final decision on your admissibility will be made by Customs and Border Protection officers upon your arrival at the ports of entry.
- Authorization pending: This means that your request has not yet been processed by the responsible authorities.
This response cannot be considered as a refusal, since the decision-making process can take up to 72 hours.
In this case, you will have to wait to receive the official decision of your request.
- Unauthorized travel: Unfortunately, this means that you are not authorized to finalize your trip to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) only.
However, this does not prevent you from going to the U.S. permanently; you may be able to obtain a valid visa from the U.S. Department of State for your trip.
Having an approved travel authorization or Visa is required not only to travel to the U.S. but also to transit through the U.S. to another country; this request applies to all nationals or citizens of countries benefiting from the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).
If you plan to cross the U.S. only to travel to another country, remember to select the answer "yes" to the question "Is your trip to the United States only a transit to another country? " on the ESTA travel authorization application.
Are you travelling with family or friends or even in a work group? Making a group request for travel authorization in the U.S. is now available on our website esta-official.co.uk.
First, please select "group request" on the home page of the site, then, you must designate a contact person who will be the group contact and will have access to perform all the file management actions.
This person will be responsible for making the payment after the group is created, and finally, he or she will also have the opportunity to check the status of all requests that are part of the group.
Are you going to visit your American friend and want to share fresh products from your country with him?
It is advisable to be careful and check with the health authorities to find out whether or not your initiative is prohibited.
In the case of the United States, esta-official.co.uk will introduce you to the regulation of certain fresh products such as:
Vegetables, fresh meat, seafood and other non-liquid foods: These foods are permitted in checked and carry-on baggage in accordance with special instructions and provided that:
- The packaging of the food is made of ice and reserved in a cooler or other container
- Ice packs must be completely frozen during inspection or the food will not be allowed as there will be a liquid in the container.
Whole fresh fruit: Only whole fresh fruit can be placed in your transport bags or hold baggage, if it was in liquid or frozen form, it would follow the liquid rule and it would be allowed in the hold and also in the cabin but in limited quantities (less than 100 ml).
Cooked meat, seafood and vegetables (without liquid): Although these foods are allowed on board, you should check with the airline to see if you will be allowed to put your cooked food in the trunk above the cabin or under the seat in front of you.
Live Lobsters: Yes, chefs will love this information! Live lobsters are allowed in your checked baggage. However, if you wish to carry them in your handbag in the cabin, the checkpoint officers will decide on the eligibility of your lobster. On the other hand, it is recommended to put the lobster in a secure and transparent plastic container. To avoid any ambiguity, we advise you to contact your airline to check the possibility of transporting a live lobster on board an aircraft.
Sandwiches: Sandwiches are of course allowed in checked and carry-on baggage as well. Have a good trip!
